“PVCL Polyethylene Meat Films are specially designed for meat wrapping application and are an ideal replacement for conventional films that contain toxic plasticizers such as phthalates, hazardous heavy metals such as lead and mercury, fungicides and other toxic substances that are harmful for human health,” said Shantanu Deshpande, Marketing Director of Specialty Polyfilms. “Along with plastic reduction, Forvara PVCL PE Meat films provide 30-40% savings in cost due to the downgauging effects of Polyethylene”, he further added.

Specialty Polyfilms reports that the Forvara PVCL PE Meat film does not crack at sub-zero temperatures of up to -22 degrees Fahrenheit. The films are odourless and run efficiently on all the Auto-tray wrapping machines.

Single-Use Plastics in Fresh Food Packaging Industry

The human nature to prioritize durability and convenience over long-term impacts has been one of the key highlights of the throwaway culture. The throwaway culture which began after World War 2 has been one of the key reasons to an exponential increase in piling up of waste across the world. 

Though, we are seeing a paradigm shift and people are becoming more conscious of this behavior but there is no denying that deep down a lot of us have accepted the fact that there is no escape from Single-Use Plastics and they are indispensable to many industries and applications. 

A proof of this is the fact that trendsetters like USA have been very cautious in laying down laws for single-use plastics and it has been done only for a few specific applications. One could argue that this has been done just to show that public opinion is being valued by the law.

If we look at the current scenario, many large corporates are on the right path to rethinking use of plastics and by the next decade we might see some major changes in our Single Use Plastic waste generation. But what the world needs is to drastically reduce our plastic waste generated today and a decade of single use plastics is something which the world cannot afford. The 3Rs were first introduced in the last century and Single-Use plastics are still thriving at the cost of our environment.

Single Use Plastics in Fresh Food Packaging

One of the most commonly used Single Use plastic applications are in the Fresh Food Packaging Industry (PVC films). This is also an industry where paper products cannot become a natural substitute for most applications.

We cannot ignore the fact that many innovations have been made in the Packaging industry, but we cannot deny that the fresh food packaging industry has been devoid of such innovations and has failed to move on from Single Use Plastics.

Many packaging specialists believe that the infrastructure set up for packaging is investment intensive and the incentive to switch from Single-Use Plastics to other options is low. Training costs will also be very high given the volume of population employed in this industry.

Thus, the most perfect solution on offer would be a solution which can work with the existing infrastructure and requires minimal training while giving similar results as the Single-Use Plastics can.

This hypothetical Win-win situation is a food for thought for many industry leaders and pioneers. While many prefer to remain in their comfort zone and choose to go with the flow, the one who chooses to stand against the tide and do the unthinkable will change the shape of this industry and prove to the world that the Fresh Food Packaging Industry is capable of redefining and reinventing itself whenever required.

An Era of Change

Last few years have seen an era where many entrepreneurs are venturing into this space. Einwegkunststoffe in der Verpackungsindustrie für frische Lebensmittel

Die menschliche Natur, Langlebigkeit und Bequemlichkeit gegenüber langfristigen Auswirkungen zu bevorzugen, ist einer der Hauptgründe für die Wegwerfkultur. Die Wegwerfkultur, die nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg begann, war einer der Hauptgründe für die exponentielle Zunahme der Abfallberge in der Welt. 

Wir erleben zwar einen Paradigmenwechsel und die Menschen werden sich dieses Verhaltens bewusster, aber es lässt sich nicht leugnen, dass viele von uns tief in ihrem Inneren die Tatsache akzeptiert haben, dass es kein Entrinnen aus Einwegkunststoffen gibt und sie für viele Branchen und Anwendungen unverzichtbar sind. 

Ein Beweis dafür ist die Tatsache, dass Trendsetter wie die USA bei der Festlegung von Gesetzen für Einwegkunststoffe sehr vorsichtig waren und dies nur für einige wenige spezifische Anwendungen getan haben. Man könnte argumentieren, dass dies nur getan wurde, um zu zeigen, dass die öffentliche Meinung durch das Gesetz gewürdigt wird.

Wenn wir uns das aktuelle Szenario ansehen, sind viele große Unternehmen auf dem richtigen Weg, um die Verwendung von Kunststoffen zu überdenken, und im nächsten Jahrzehnt könnten wir einige größere Veränderungen bei der Erzeugung von Einwegkunststoffabfällen sehen. Was die Welt jedoch braucht, ist eine drastische Reduzierung der heute anfallenden Kunststoffabfälle, und ein Jahrzehnt der Einwegkunststoffe kann sich die Welt nicht leisten. Die 3R wurden erstmals im letzten Jahrhundert eingeführt und Einwegkunststoffe gedeihen immer noch auf Kosten unserer Umwelt.

Einwegkunststoffe in Verpackungen für frische Lebensmittel

Eine der am häufigsten verwendeten Einweg-Kunststoffanwendungen ist die Verpackung von frischen Lebensmitteln (PVC-Folien). Dies ist auch eine Branche, in der Papierprodukte für die meisten Anwendungen kein natürlicher Ersatz sein können.

Wir können die Tatsache nicht ignorieren, dass es in der Verpackungsindustrie viele Innovationen gegeben hat, aber wir können nicht leugnen, dass es in der Verpackungsindustrie für frische Lebensmittel keine derartigen Innovationen gegeben hat und dass sie es versäumt hat, sich von Einwegkunststoffen zu lösen.

Viele Verpackungsspezialisten sind der Ansicht, dass die für die Verpackung eingerichtete Infrastruktur investitionsintensiv ist und der Anreiz, von Einwegkunststoffen auf andere Optionen umzusteigen, gering ist. Auch die Ausbildungskosten werden angesichts der großen Zahl der in dieser Branche Beschäftigten sehr hoch sein.

Die perfekteste Lösung wäre daher eine Lösung, die mit der bestehenden Infrastruktur arbeiten kann und nur minimale Schulung erfordert, aber ähnliche Ergebnisse wie die Einwegkunststoffe liefert.

Diese hypothetische Win-Win-Situation ist ein Denkanstoß für viele Branchenführer und Pioniere. Während viele es vorziehen, in ihrer Komfortzone zu bleiben und mit dem Strom zu schwimmen, wird derjenige, der sich dafür entscheidet, gegen den Strom zu schwimmen und das Undenkbare zu tun, die Form dieser Branche verändern und der Welt beweisen, dass die Verpackungsindustrie für frische Lebensmittel in der Lage ist, sich selbst neu zu definieren und neu zu erfinden, wann immer dies erforderlich ist.

Eine Ära des Wandels

In den letzten Jahren haben sich viele Unternehmer in diesen Bereich vorgewagt.
